Things that need fixing

Hi there,

So that we can get this site working fully, could members please use this thread to list bugs/errors that are affecting them on the site?  Could you also please let us know what developments you'd like to see on Writing4all?  Before you proceed to do so, however, could you please ensure you read the dos and donts:

The dos

1. Do let us know about functional problems - i.e. logging in issues, saving issues, not receiving notifications etc

2. Do let us know about issues with the structure/set-up of the site - i.e. multiple postings, feedback not encouraged enough etc

3. Do let us know about what you'd like to see on the site in future - e.g. podcastings, video uploads, Private Messaging between friends

The don'ts

1. Please try to avoid reporting errors/issues that other members have already noted in this thread

2. Please don't use this thread to slag off other members, the site or myself. Firstly, you shouldn't slag off other members, and if you want to vent about the site or its staff, there's plenty of other threads on the site where you can do so!

-

Previous attempts to do this have resulted with threads that contain 300 or so messages, the majority of which have been posts which - justifiably - have contained complaint after complaint.  For reasons too numerous to list, many of the problems that have arisen on the site over the last 12 months have not been fixed or have been fixed only to break again.  We know this isn't good enough, and we are very sad to see some users grow so tired with the site that they have left.  This thread, then, is a chance to put things things right, and we'd very grateful for your input - afterall, without you there is no site.  To those who've spent time doing this before only to find themselves feeling as if they'd been ignored, I am sorry, and I sincerely hope this will be the time we get things sorted.

This thread will be open for two weeks (until October 18th); at that stage, I will then collate all the information here and present it to the right people so that we can move forward and get this site working to its full potential.

Best wishes,

Thomas

Hi Thomas - good to see this forum opened up.

I'd like to see an option on a user's profile which would allow the user to block access, to his/her profile, to an unwanted visitor - this would help to eliminate mindless stalking.

Cheers

John

Hi thomas I agree with John there and I would also like the option of flagging a comment as offensive and not just a poem.  Also maybe putting up a "rules of the site" very clearly that states that nuisance posting and offensive comments will not be tolerated and if this rule is ingnored it will result in the permenant banning of any member who breeches these rules.  That way fair warning has been given.

thank you

Hi Thomas

I would also wish to thank you regarding this thread.

I would like to ask while Im at it.

Is there a possibility when you get a chance of course.

That Aine and I could get our emoticons back please.

I think it is reversed as they are usable when adding a piece but not when replying to comments.

If I have left any one out who's emoticonless please forgive me.

Thanks Again Thomas

Yours sincerly

Susanna Dunne.

Hi Thomas,

First off, well done on executing this particular forum and may the actions taken hereafter be positive and constructive for the real members and also provide a hope for those exceptional writers that this site has lost over the last year or two, through one thing or another. I hope this is not just a knee jerk reaction to the exodus of fine honest and well intentioned members but more of a situation that the site hopes to honestly work and return to it's former glory days, encompassing well founded wishes and e-mails from many members.

This site was a first time site for many users and it nurtured many well formed virtual friendships, many of whom still exist.

I won't put up a Christmas wish list as I appreciate technical monies don't drop of the money tree any longer, with that in mind, here are a few idea to add to the already mentioned above,

Closer monitoring of new members, best practice policy.

A clearer line to your mail room, I know you can't reply to everything but for emergencies.

An in house critique circle

Sharper sourcing for poetry comps, fiction and non fiction

Private messaging but with a stronger idiot proof filter

Once again I really do thank you for your interventions on my behalf and also of other members

Thomas,

Thanks for this thread,  i keep  some obervations comprehensive,

1. More control over your profile such as a private or public option like on face book. Also can you look into a fact a fan relationship can be set up without a users permission.

2.  status updates appearing on the main page such as XX commented on this peom or YY has become friends with ZZ.  perhaps a control function in your edit profile to disable activity notifications here for people who don't wish their activity while logged on to show up on the main page.

3. Delete option on comments  and perhaps a block from certain users posting (if this is possible)

4. Sometimes when i post a comment the website "times out" and crashes, when i press the back button my comment is there but i have not gained any points. (HTTP 500 internal server error - Is there a compatabilly issue with browers?)

5. Perhaps some sort of a private forum (not visable to non members of course) that current users could flag problems or concerns. That W4all can post regular updates on progress to keep users informed of any measures taken on IT or other issues.

I would find logging problems easier this way than having to email directly.

6. The flag as offensive button is coming up as an error the message is HTTP 200 error.

Thanks again,

Glenda

Just more criteria on what the monthly competition entails, as I have not seen guidlnes as to how these excerpts are selected.

Other than that everything is cool, you have to take the good with the bad and by no means should this site be turned into a utopia for elitist. Neurotic members tend to leave after a while anyway.

I believe this site should welcome all members and at the end of the day when there is a virtual environment newcomers will simply have to learn the norms and we cannot assume anyone has the intention to write crazy posts. It is very easy to get our wires crossed when we are writing and reading things.

Thank you for the thread

Hi Thomas

Thanks for this opportunity.

  •  I think if there is offensive comment, it is very difficult for a person to approach another about this; it depends on the other person's reasonableness but sexual innuendo (really trashy)  and racist remarks I believe have no place on this site.  Now  I have engaged in sexual banter myself  but I would like to think that it was fun and invited comments  it was not distasteful.
  • Would like to be able to email privately
  •

  • I dont necessarily think that the number of hits or comments a person gets should make a particular piece of writing eligible to be regarded as good/popular.  I think it has to do with the quality not the popularity of the person. It would be good if there was an independent view. This site should always maintain a certain quality of writing I think.
  •

  • Multiple  posting should not be tolerated- in short, anything that affect the enjoyment of others to use the site should not be tolerated.  Multiple posting pieces should be deleted.
  •

  • When a post is deleted, just the actual written piece, be it  poem, prose is just deleted.  The comments, title of piece should be capable of being deleted also.
  •

  • Comments should be capable of being edited as you can comment on something and then in a few minutes or even seconds change your mind.
  •

  • Thanking you.  Margaret

Thomas - I think you urgently need a moderator - have you seen all the last rubbish courtesy of Turttlebay, Ned and HokusPokus et al. Too many users are using the site for silly games.

    Good luck

Thomas, hello to you and I hope you are well...

Is there any hope that anything can be fixed ?

it's hard to take the site seriously any more, which is such a shame..I have had so many wonderful hours here with such great and productive friendships, but it just doesn't seem possible any more...

You know better than any of us what is wrong here....but there is a longstanding lack of will further up the chain of command and influence, so what to do? But please let us know if this has changed...

    Love from Oz..

    Hi,

I noticed the site was down for a day or two recently. When I went back on I found that a work of mine posted to fiction on New year's Eve had vanished, called "A Life Half-Lived". Comments submitted by me appear to have rolled back to an earlier stage as well.

I sent an e-mail to info@writing4all.ie a couple of days ago but I have heard nothing. Is this the proper place to address the problem? Look forward to hearing from you.

    Regards,
    Robert

No response! A bit disappointed, I have to say. Is there anybody in particular I can e-mail who might investigate this or am I wasting my time a this stage?

    Hey Rob,

Try thomas@writing4all.ie. Pity we've all lost postings and the comments attached. There was some good feedback I was planning to look at again and incorporate.
