I am new here

As you can see from my profile - yep you'll need to take a look (LOL)cheeky I do more on the editing side than writing.  Hoping to change that though soon.   If I don't get more people interested in writing for my mediaeval annual it will be REAL soon - LOL. .  I could waffle on for hours here as I am not really sure what  I should be saying about myself.  Far easier if you ask me questions and I will write up a response.   Going to look round the site over the coming weekend and upload some of my attempts at writing and hope for some help on how to improve on my attempts.

Lovely to meet you all..

Unfortunately this place is quiet at the moment as site problems occured in here. Many have gone rather quiet - or maybe drifted off.

Good luck with the writing.

Oh dear bit disappointed.  I thought it would be great to network with people from Ireland and who were interested in writing too.  Should I stay for a bit and hope things improve or try and find another group?  Do you know of anyother group?

Hi, I joined the site on the same day as you but I've found that there is plenty of traffic in the sections where you can post your material. I've posted two pieces of fiction and two pieces of non fiction and can see that they have been read, there have been some lovely positive comments posted on them aswell. Now I'm just waiting for a bit of constructive criticism to help me clean up any mistakes I'm making or pitfalls I'm falling into.

Looking forward to reading some of your work.

I'll look at your pieces and supply some 'criticism'.

I find feedback is always welcome.

Stick with the site for the time being.

Thanks a million for the words of advice, Ed. I always think that when I say something like, "constructive criticism welcome" people will read it as, "take a look at my story and tell me I'm great," so it's very refreshing to receive some advise I can actually use.

Will check this out.  Just realised that I have to do my TMA for the OU but will upload my stories after that.

'Criticism' reminds me.

Someone wrote a very strong piece here once, quite evocative, strong. Some of it was so good I took some lines from it so as to imitate the style and subject  & when I ever wrote upon the same subject. I wrote on it  by starting a line like 'just two criticisms first...', I listed two criticisms I felt it had but then praised it highly and stated words like I would try and imitate such writing where I wanted to write or describe such a scenario.

A heap of folk all replied with a 'how-dare-you-criticise it' tone ignoring all the praise I'd given it. Even the writer practically came on the offensive all but saying they hadn't written to be 'criticised' blah blah ('gimme a break', thought I). It was a very strong piece - some fine writing in it.  I'd opened with likes like 'first two points I want to get out of the way and pointed out two items...' something like that. But those who took up the cudgels only saw and read all my apparent 'criticism.'

If one does attain and arrive at the dizzy heights of book reviews and receive book reviews, you may well get one, two to three good, great reviews. But be ready for the critics from then on once you maybe publish some more work. It aint for the thin-skinned; if one's easily offended by a literary review of one's own work; get a different job.

Whereas 'criticism' where it's feedback and something the writer wouldn't have seen something in their won work, it's fine.

(I'm my own worst sub-editor by the way...)

What can I say? I think you encounter that kind off attitude in all walks of life. Personally, I find that when I've written something I always feel a nagging sense that something isn't quite right with it.

I think that when someone else reads it and points out bits that didn't quite work, it allows me to approach it again from a fresh perspective. For example, I wasn't entirely happy with my story "Gas" but the pointers you gave me opened my eyes a bit to some of it's weaknesses, I dove back in and found quite a few areas that could be improved upon. Even though I didn't take all of your advice on every point, it got me thinking enough to find my own solutions.

I'm still not 100% happy with the last couple of paragraphs but overall I'm quite proud of the story now and I wouldn't have been able to get to that point without the constructive criticism.

Having said that, I'm by no means suggesting that a writer should be jumping at every suggestion he is given, constantly rewriting the story for each bit of advice he receives. Sometimes you've got to stick to your guns, but you should at least know why you are sticking to your guns.

Thanks Joe. I've only been a member for two weeks now but feel like it's been a lot longer. I'm really enjoying the site and thanks to the encouragement and feedback I've been getting, I've written more in the last two weeks than I usually would in two months.

I have been very busy lately with work, travelling and studying so I don't get to the site as much as I would like - shame.  Hoping to get more time soon.  Touch wood...

Good luck and best wishes to you , stick with the teething probs ,
